Frontiers in Inflammation Research – Mechanisms, Mediators and Biomarkers in the Onset and Resolution of Inflammation
September 29-October 2, 2025
School description
Chronic inflammation is recognized as the underlying cause of several pathological states and over the last couples of decades increasing attention has been paid to the mechanisms physiologically leading to the resolution of the inflammatory response looking for novel therapeutic approaches.
A switch in the profile of cytokines, lipid mediators and other signaling molecules is typically observed transitioning from the acute inflammatory response to the resolution phase of inflammation. Prostaglandins and leukotrienes are known to possess potent pro-inflammatory activities while others lipid mediators, such as specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPM), have anti-inflammatory and/or pro-resolving activities. The transition from inflammation to resolution is also accompanied by changes in the polarization and differentiation of immune cells such as macrophages or lymphocytes. A better understanding of the mechanisms that control the onset and resolution of inflammation may provide novel approaches to the treatment of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, COPD, asthma or inflammatory bowel diseases.
The Advanced School will therefore focus on the following topics:
– Lipid mediators and other signaling molecules in the onset and resolution of inflammation
– Lipid mediators and hormones in cancer and other diseases
– Mechanisms of the onset and resolution of inflammation
– Signal cascades that regulate inflammatory processes
– Cellular plasticity in inflammatory processes
– RNA – lipid signaling interactions
– Biomarkers and surrogate markers in inflammatory diseases
– Artificial Intelligence for diagnosis and treatments
A beautiful location
Lake Como School of Advanced studies is located c/o Fondazione Alessandro Volta in the beautiful setting of Villa del Grumello, in Como, Italy

Venue & Accommodation
The Lake Como School of Advanced Studies is an international research facility. We run fellowships, short term programmes on a wide range of interdisciplinary subjects, that share a common focus on complex systems.
